What this makes possible

Howdy Reader,

If paradox is your love language, read on....

This week in yoga, I themed classes based on a question inspired by my friend Maggie and the canon of work called Liberating Structures. It's all about asking questions in a thoughtful and useful way, and I'm presently obsessed with the question that is better than why.

What question could be better than why?!

"What does this make possible?"

Dude.

'Why' leaves the door so far open that you have to keep asking it, like a wordy nerdy toddler.

'What does this make possible,' asks you if you're taking a particular action based in fear or reason. Preparation or protection. It's powerful.

What does this lunge make possible? How about this meditation? Or this breath practice?

Strength, in service of taking the stairs more often or climbing ruins.
The possibility of calm.
The potential of self-awareness.

It's even good outside of the warm and cozy tech-free environment of a studio yoga class.

What does drinking this 3pm triple shot macchiato make possible?
Powering through the afternoon in a frenzied, over-caffeinated and perpetually exhausted manner.

What does a 30 minute power nap make possible?
Rational, coherent thought AND a proper bed time.

Is it magic?! No. Does it feel more useful to me in more circumstances than 'why'? Indeed.

Try it on?

What does this make possible?

Report back?

K

HowdyReader! Before you pack away your swim suits and sandals and bust out the pumpkin spice, I have an invitation for you (and it's free - it's not a sales pitch).Hold your horses. Not literally, although that's fine, too if you've got 'em. An interlude, an opportunity to pause and reflect and evaluate. Where I used to be move breathlessly from one flight...

Howdy Reader Despite eating tofu never in my home of origin, I started incorporating it into my diet circa 2005. Partially, this was a financially motivated decision. Partially, it was a way to limit the potential of cross-contamination from E. coli bearing protein sources, and possibly it had to do with the relatively uninsulated nature of my lunchbox and my PB&J appetite wearing thin. I taught myself, mostly through trial and error and possibly through some cookbooks borrowed from the...

HowdyReader,This week past week I've been teaching a little ditty about Karma, carrots, and sticks. In the West, we often mistranslate the concept of karma into something that feels more aligned with our adorable Western ideals.Ever seen a "karma jar" placed on a counter for tips? Heard someone say, "Karma's a bitch!" when they see someone act all tyrant-like to their friendly grocery clerk and then get splashed by an epic puddle of snow melt/ice/sand/mag chloride? This is not the thing. In the...
