Hold your horses

HowdyReader!

Before you pack away your swim suits and sandals and bust out the pumpkin spice, I have an invitation for you (and it's free - it's not a sales pitch).

Hold your horses.

Not literally, although that's fine, too if you've got 'em. This sweet, special time of year? This last ten days of summer? In the sacred wisdom of Chinese Medicine, this time is the season of Earth. An interlude, an opportunity to pause and reflect and evaluate. Where I used to be move breathlessly from one flight to the next, one training to the next, one week or season or year to the next without much reflection (I literally used to have two cars so that one could be ready and packed in advance because my turnovers were so tight), I do things differently now.

I endeavor to take these ten days between to experience some element of liminality. To pause, and step back, and look at the elements of my life within my control and consider. While I don't exactly have the complete luxury to just stop and do nothing in the hammock, I do feel a sense of responsibility to myself and to you.

I call this a period of evaluation.

Personally, I benefit from periods of commitment and periods of evaluation, because my hummingbird nature would otherwise have me changing directions every six seconds. Then I would be disoriented, and likely spill that disorientation everywhere in my wake.

Here's the methodology:
Open up your calendar to the next ten days
Squeeze in an appointment or two (or more) where you can sit and reflect on Fall
What would I like to add?
What would I like to pause?
What are my priorities?
How can I best prepare myself for the ebbs and flows of fall?

Maybe it feels very logistical for you - like snow tires and flu shots. Maybe it feels more emotional or values-based - like how can I better emotionally prepare for Thanksgiving?

(It's ok if this feels sloppy and weird, and if you aren't able to completely sort out every minute detail of your life in ten days, ten minutes at a time.)

On September 23rd, add an appointment to your calendar for December 11th.

Between now and then, when you think about a thing you'd like to add to your life or business, consider whether that's the sort of thing that ought to happen the moment you think about it (getting sober is a good one!) or something that might benefit from a period of evaluation and a period of commitment (like a new training course, or... you know... medical school...). As someone who randomly applied to a post-graduate program January 9th of this year and started on January 17th, I can recommend this in particular.

If it's a thing that could benefit from some evaluation, open up that December 11th appointment and add it to the list. Decide when to decide.

For me, my next season is a little TBA. I have some vehicular maintenance priorities and plan to start taking immunology in October. The rest will sort out over the next ten days into a soft and malleable 'plan.'

Howdy Reader Despite eating tofu never in my home of origin, I started incorporating it into my diet circa 2005. Partially, this was a financially motivated decision. Partially, it was a way to limit the potential of cross-contamination from E. coli bearing protein sources, and possibly it had to do with the relatively uninsulated nature of my lunchbox and my PB&J appetite wearing thin. I taught myself, mostly through trial and error and possibly through some cookbooks borrowed from the...

Howdy Reader,If paradox is your love language, read on....This week in yoga, I themed classes based on a question inspired by my friend Maggie and the canon of work called Liberating Structures. It's all about asking questions in a thoughtful and useful way, and I'm presently obsessed with the question that is better than why. What question could be better than why?!"What does this make possible?"Dude.'Why' leaves the door so far open that you have to keep asking it, like a wordy nerdy...

HowdyReader,This week past week I've been teaching a little ditty about Karma, carrots, and sticks. In the West, we often mistranslate the concept of karma into something that feels more aligned with our adorable Western ideals.Ever seen a "karma jar" placed on a counter for tips? Heard someone say, "Karma's a bitch!" when they see someone act all tyrant-like to their friendly grocery clerk and then get splashed by an epic puddle of snow melt/ice/sand/mag chloride? This is not the thing. In the...
